CYBER MONDAY IN SAN BERNARDINO AIRPORT COMMUNITIES

On Dec. 2, 2019 — Cyber Monday in America, hundreds of residents in San Bernardino and surrounding neighborhoods are holding a community picket line at a local Amazon warehouse, demanding a Community Benefits Agreement for the proposed regional air hub development at San Bernardino International Airport, which we believe to be in development for operation by Amazon. Residents are asking that the retail giant come to a binding agreement on guaranteed living-wage jobs with good working conditions, as well as strong air pollution reduction plans at the proposed facility (called “Eastgate”). Today, community members are “shining a light” on Amazon’s current stranglehold on working-class communities across San Bernardino and Riverside counties and its anticipated future at SB Airport.

The Community Benefits Agreement demanded by San Bernardino Airport Communities articulates a vision for our communities and for a future that encompasses responsible development, quality jobs, clean air, and safe neighborhoods. Riverside and San Bernardino counties are home to 94% of Amazon’s warehouse space in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, and San Bernardino counties. Amazon facilities have a huge impact on the neighborhoods of the Inland Empire, and it is critical that they reflect the values of those communities, and recognize their responsibility to promote the wellbeing of their neighbors. What kind of a neighbor has Amazon been lately? In San Bernardino, they’ve polluted the air and failed to pay workers a fair share of their immense profits! San Bernardino can have good jobs and clean air moving forward! Amazon’s regional air hub at San Bernardino International Airport can be a standard-setting development. Today we are standing up and speaking out about it!
